A small town of 2,200, Telluride, Colorado, is five hours from either Santa Fe or Denver. It does have its own regional airport should you want something more convenient. This is another one of those small towns in Colorado that welcomes famous visitors because of its out-of-the-way location. One of the annual events in Telluride that keeps people coming back year after year is the Blues and Brews Festival. B.B. King commented in 2004 while playing the festival that Telluride was one of the prettiest places he’d ever played, and he’s played them all. That’s something special for sure. Held annually in September for the last 14 years, this festival draws some of the best musicians and beers in the United States. In 2006, performers included John Mayer, Lou Reed and Bruce Hornsby. Breweries in attendance include Flying Dog and Sierra Nevada. You’ll have fun at this event.
Another event not to miss is the Telluride Film Festival. 2007 will be its 34th year hosting the stars, and while it doesn’t have the star power of the Sundance Film Festival, the celebrities that show up actually enjoy themselves in the late-summer weather. Held on the Labor Day weekend each year, what better way to move into fall than attending a film festival in the mountains.
Telluride was originally a mining town that’s been transformed into a wonderful ski area. In the 1970s, the town had fallen on hard times and the locals looked to revive the area by improving the local skiing. The mountain lends itself to skiers of all types and the après ski is first rate. In terms of accommodations, the town offers every type. One of the top hotels around is the Hotel Telluride, located just off the main drag.
Travel & Leisure ranks it in the top 100 hotels in North America. You can even buy a unit if you feel like making more than one visit.
For one of the best, laid-back vacations in ski country, Telluride is the place to go.
